Kenya’s most important landscape for painted wolves is the 42,000 km² Tsavo Conservation Area.
A flagship project for the Painted Wolf Foundation (PWF) and Painted Dog Fund (PDF) is the technical and financial support provided to our partner, Tsavo Trust, working in close collaboration with Kenya’s Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI).
This partnership has catalysed a major, coordinated conservation effort for the species in Tsavo East to strengthen our understanding of painted dog population density and distribution, enabling us to identify key threats and implement targeted mitigation strategies.
A long-term conservation programme for Tsavo East’s painted wolves was formally shaped during a highly productive multi-partner meeting held in Voi, at WRTI’s Tsavo headquarters during March 2026.
This process identified clear priority areas where PWF and PDF could continue to support the Tsavo Trust–WRTI collaboration, helping to secure the future of painted wolves across this critical landscape.
