Making Tsavo Safer for Painted Wolves

Painted wolves have been confirmed crossing the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, connecting the populations of Kenya’s Tsavo East and Tsavo West National Parks.

The discovery provides important new insight into how painted wolves move through the area and is changing how conservation for the species will be planned in this key landscape.

Through ongoing monitoring, the team recorded multiple crossings by the Kamboyo Pack between April and June.

Unfortunately, two recorded painted wolf mortalities were also recently recorded on this highway. Roads are a significant threat to the painted wolf population.

That is why the Painted Dog Fund and Painted Wolf Foundation have invested in a long-term conservation project in this landscape with Tsavo Trust, in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service and Wildlife Research and Training Institute.

Findings like these guide targeted conservation action, better protecting the painted wolves in this critical landscape.
