Dispersal Females Meet New Males in Lower Zambezi

Exciting news from Zambia’s Lower Zambezi. The young female painted wolves have been spotted with two males!

These images of the possible new pack were taken by Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ). The females are part of the group of eight that dispersed from the Jeki pack in June in search of unrelated males and the chance to start a new breeding pack.

They later split into two groups, but with only one group collared, it became critical for the CLZ painted wolf conservation team to find and monitor the other group. The other group of females was eventually spotted with the new males and a team were able to successfully collar one female.

With funding from the Painted Dog Fund, CLZ’s Stephen Ngoma and Christine Mwewa will continue monitoring and protecting these painted wolves, giving them the best chance of successfully forming a new breeding pack. The specialist skills the team developed through the Painted Wolf Conservation Leadership Programme are helping strengthen this work on the ground.

The Leadership Programme is a partnership between the Painted Wolf Foundation, Zambian Carnivore Programme and Painted Dog Conservation, funded by the Painted Dog Fund.
