When eight females dispersed from the Jeki pack in Zambia’s Zambezi Valley, one was fitted with the satellite collar used to monitor the pack.
This made it significantly harder for the Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) ecology team to monitor the remaining Jeki pack members during a critical time, with the alpha female heavily pregnant.
Fortunately, the alpha male was fitted with a new satellite collar during the recent successful desnaring operation by CLZ and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, with vet support from Game Rangers International.
CLZ ecologists Christine Mwewa and Stephen Ngoma recently took part in the Painted Wolf Conservation Leadership Programme. The specialist skills and practical field experience they gained are now directly supporting their work monitoring and protecting the Jeki pack.
They continue to draw on technical support from the Painted Wolf Foundation and Zambian Carnivore Programme as they respond to the challenges facing the pack during this vulnerable time.
By strengthening specialist painted wolf conservation skills, the Leadership Programme is helping teams respond to challenges on the ground.
