Like a painted wolf hunting, our investment process
is robust, repeatable, and consistent.

1. Analysis

PWF conducts a rigorous analysis across all range states that have painted wolves. We draw on multi-sources of information to uncover the best investment opportunities and the most trusted organisations to partner with.

2. Site Visits

Any significant investment requires a site visit. This ensures a better understanding of conditions on the ground and allows us to develop strong foundations with those that we wish to partner with.

3. Building Partnerships

Strong partnerships are at the heart of our investment strategy. We look for those that have proven track records, strong management and a clear vision for the landscape they are working in. We also want to support fledgling organisations that show potential and the energy to make a difference.

4. Developing Proposals

Any investment request must be through a detailed proposal, which describes the ambitions, challenges and the outcomes our investment should achieve. We work with our partners to shape these proposals to ensure best practice conservation practices are adopted and adapted to match local conditions.

5. Agreeing Outcomes

Proposals do not only outline activities but also define expected short and long-term outcomes. This allows us to evaluate the return on investment (ROI) and helps shapes the size and priority of each grant.

6. Investment

Having agreed a proposal and budget with our partner, it is sent to the Painted Dog Fund Granting Committee who independently assess the investment opportunity. Consisting of a broad range of conservation and scientific experts, the proposal is carefully scrutinised, and may be accepted, amended or rejected.

7. Continuous Monitoring and Support

Once investments have been made, we remain in close contact with our partners as they implement the programme. We help train those employed to implement painted wolf conservation and provide a forum of experts to help them respond to any challenges they face.

8. Performance Review

All partners provide us with a brief six-monthly report and a detailed qualitative and quantitative annual report which allows us to measure the return on investment. This report, with further site visits, determines our regranting strategy which is based on both results and need.

9. Long-term

It is unlikely that a single year’s grant will have the transformation impact we are looking for. We must take a long-term view to achieve this, expecting great strides forward but accepting inevitable setbacks. Strong partnerships with a shared vision and passion are key to achieving a lasting impact.
