2023 – Making An Impact
Doubling Their Numbers
Our journey’s begun…
2023 is a milestone for the Painted Wolf Foundation. It is the year that we began investing in our strategy to double the number of painted wolves.
This year we have committed over US$170,000 to painted wolf projects across Africa. We are bringing conservation to previously unprotected areas and taking steps to increase the spaces where they can thrive.
Please scroll down to see a summary of what we have achieved and download our 2023 Activity Report to learn more.
None of this would be possible without your support. A big thank you from me, my Board and the organisations that we support!

Spreading Best Practice
Kickstarting four painted wolf projects across Africa
PWF are kick-starting four painted wolf conservation initiatives across Africa in areas where packs remain unprotected:
- A collaborative painted wolf project in the Maasai Lands of Southern Kenya.
- Supporting the Zoological Society of London to set up “Project Lycaon” in Senegal protecting the last remaining painted wolves in West Africa.Â
- A painted wolf project north ofthe Kgalighadi in Botswana to protect the packs and support coexistence with local San communities.
- A collaborative painted wolf project in the Lower Zambezi National Park in Zambia.

Preparing The Ground
Bringing reintroductions into the mainstream
The Painted Wolf Foundation has initiated a project to develop “A Model for Reintroduction Success” with leading conservationists who have direct experience in relocating painted wolves. This collaborative model will guide our future investments.
We also funded the Endangered Wildlife Trust to investigate three potential areas across East and Southern Africa where future reintroductions could be possible as part of our effort to find more space for them to exist. Learn more…
Collar Collaboration
Funding a collaboration to benefit the species as a whole
In 2023 we supported pioneering engineering firm, SpoorTrack to trial an innovative solar powered collar across different landscapes.
These collars are now being deployed in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia to test how they perform across different terrains. They have the potential to be a game changer. Learn more…
Building Capacity
Developing more skills to protect the packs
In February 2023, we worked with Painted Dog Conservation (PDC) to develop a nine day intensive programme, inviting six experienced Maasai conservationists to come to Zimbabwe from Southern Kenya to learn about painted do conservation.
The programme immersed them in PDC’s different conservation approaches including tracking, anti-poaching, rehabilitation, scat analysis, community education and community outreach. Learn more…
Strong Governance
Giving donors the confidence to join our journey
During 2023, the Painted Wolf Foundation built a powerful leadership and governance structure with the necessary experience, capacity and processes to deliver on our ambitious plan.
We now have in place a highly experienced Board of Trustees, a rigorous investment process and a strong Granting Committee.
This ensures that our investments are thoroughly scrutinised and your donations are always invested carefully and wisely for the greatest impact. Learn more…
Recognising Dedication
Celebrating Di and people like her
PWF and the African Leadership University’s inaugural award was presented at the School of Wildlife Conservation’s Business of Conservation Conference held in Kigali, Rwanda, at the end of August.
Over 50 people were nominated and a shortlist of ten were selected and celebrated at the conference. This year’s deserved winner is Norah Njiraini from Amboseli Trust for Elephants, in Kenya. Learn more…
Partnerships
Working with the best
This year, the Painted Wolf Foundation has developed partnerships, collaborations and friendships with amazing organisations working hard to create more secure places for African wildlife and the people who live among it.
